63 year old gentleman complaining of back pain for years.
He also complained that his ribs were hurting his pelvic bones.
He was diagnosed to have Lumbar Degenerative Scoliosis with Flat Back Deformity and Osteoporosis
While standing, he would stoop forward and his head would be several centimetres ahead of his hips
He was operated in the form of Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) from L2 to S1 through an incision on the belly.
This was followed by posterior Percutaneous Pedicle Screw Placement from L2 to S1
Patient has a good correction of his lumbar scoliosis, correction of lumbar lordosis and restoration of sagittal spine alignment.
ALIF surgery restores natural lumbar lordosis and spinal alignment. It involves negligible blood loss and none of the paraspinal muscles are damaged as a result of this approach
Similarly, Percutaneous Pedicle Screw placement does not damage the paraspinal muscles and leads to better outcomes as compared to the traditional open posterior lumbar fusion technique. This is the most minimally invasive technique of Lumbar Fusion
This patient was discharged from the hospital in 5 days and was back to active life within couple of weeks
